James M. "Jim" Gilbert, 83, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Major Hospital.
Born March 28, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Harold Marion and Louise (Proctor) Gilbert. He married Judith A. "Judy" Osborne on November 11, 1976, and she survives.
Other survivors include his son, Jake Gilbert of Louisville, Kentucky; daughters, Leslie Mark-Magsig of Orlando, Florida and Meg (husband, Paul) Whiteside of Chicago; step-son, Byron Arbuckle of Shelbyville and step-daughter, Michelle (husband, Larry) Watson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; brother, Richard Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Megan (husband, Ryan) Spicer, Anthony (wife, Meredith) Gilbert, Ryan (wife, Brandi) Mark, Emily Whiteside and Joe Whiteside; great-grandsons, Rylan Mark and Austin Gilbert; and nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son-in-law, Larry Magsig.
Mr. Gilbert graduated from Chicago High School in 1945 and DePauw University in 1950 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He was a member of Lambda Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at DePauw.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Mr. Gilbert formerly owned and operated Walker Wholesale Grocery in Shelbyville for 15 years and had been an investment broker for Prudential (formerly Thompson McKinnon) for 30 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rotary International, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elk, where he was an exalted ruler. He also had been a board member of the Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library and the SSCPL Foundation.
Memorial services will be held at a later day, with interment in Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
