James Murray Mewborn, 78, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Ashford Place Health Campus.
Born November 10, 1933 in Columbus, he was the son of James Mewborn and Hazel (Freese) Sawin. He married Judy Mewborn on June 29, 1957, and she survives.
Other survivors include his sons, Dan (wife, Teresa) Mewborn of Indianapolis, Mike (wife, Jackie) Mewborn of Carmel and Steve (wife, Stephanie) Mewborn of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Karen (husband, Gary) Provins of Traverse City, Michigan; grandsons, Jason Mewborn, Joey Mewborn, Matt Mewborn and Tom Mewborn; granddaughters, Ella Provins, Ava Provins and Audrey Mewborn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, who raised him, Ray Sawin.
Mr. Mewborn was a lifelong resident of Shelbyville.
He retired from Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent in 1999.
Mr. Mewborn was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Korean War.
He was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and the Optimist Club.
Mr. Mewborn graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1952 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington for two years.
He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mr. Mewborn enjoyed and looked forward to the annual family vacation to Hilton Head.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., with a rosary recited at 3:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway Street in Shelbyville, with Father Leon Reuter officiating.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
