James Richard Bennett

March 28, 1930 — March 9, 2017

James Richard Bennett, 86, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Waldron Health and Rehab in Waldron. He was born March 28, 1930, in Columbia, Pennsylvania, the son of William E. and Pearl (Harshbarger) Bennett. On June 16, 1952, he married Mamie Hill, and she preceded him in death on April 14, 2007. James is survived by his daughter-in-law, Linda Day; grandchildren, Todd Day, James Day and wife, Tammy, Eric Bennett, Amy Bennett and Dustin Day; and a great-granddaughter, Ashlin Day. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and step-sons, David Allen Day and Donald Ralph Day. James was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. James was a member of the former St. George Lutheran Church. He was formerly a cook at Atterbury 5th Army Hospital and worked at Evans-Wheeler Concrete Block Company from 1955 to 1965. James retired from Diamond Chain in 1985, with 20 years of service. James was also a member of American Legion Post No. 70. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Rev. Bill Horner officiating. Interment will be at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Association of Shelby County, PO Box 844, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
