John Berkley Smith, 75, of Greenfield, formerly of Fairland, passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Greenfield.
He was born February 7, 1940, in Fairland, the son of Winston Berkley and Edna Marie (Huffman) Smith. He married Michelle Monday on January 7, 1984, and she survives.
John is also survived by his daughter, Kimberly Ann Alford and husband, Brian, of Greenfield; son, Gilbert J. Grider of Beech Grove; grandchildren, Jessika Jaussaud, Jami Jaussaud, Jozee Jaussaud, Landon Alford and Marissa Grider; and great-granddaughter, Eva Roze Santoni.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John graduated from Fairland High School in 1958.
He was a member of Gray Road Baptist Church in Beech Grove.
John retired from International Harvester in 1998, with 30 years of service.
He enjoyed all animals, but he especially loved dogs. John was an avid walker. He loved going for walks in his woods with his dogs, looking for mushrooms.
John was a dedicated family man. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, they were his world.
Graveside services will be at 3 pm, Monday, February 8, 2016 at Fairland Cemetery in Fairland.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
