John M. Gibson

John Milton Gibson, 83, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born October 29, 1928 in Athens, Ohio, he was the son of Bartlett M. and Alice (May) Gibson. He married Gail Duane King on June 6, 1954, and she preceded him in death on September 3, 2005. Survivors include his daughters, Robin (husband, Dan) Winings of Indianapolis and Bonnie (husband, Jeff Winkler) Gibson of Phoenix, Arizona; son, Jeffry Gibson of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Amber (husband, David) Grimes, Chief Petty Officer J.C. (wife, Melissa) Gibson, Kelly Gibson, Kyle Winings, Katie (husband, Syd) Nicholson, Kevin Winings, Daniel Winkler and Ryan Winkler; and seven great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Betty Scott and Jane Welding. Mr. Gibson interned for the Indianapolis architectural firm of D.A. Bohlen and Son, joined the firm and practiced there his entire career, retiring as a name partner in Bohlen, Meyer and Gibson in 1991. Following retirement, he served as an engineering consultant for Shelbyville Central School from 1991 to 2006. He designed several landmark buildings in Shelbyville, including First United Methodist Church, The Shelbyville News administration office building, the Salvation Army headquarters, and the Carnegie Library Annex. He was also a member of the planning commission for the Healing Garden at Benesse Oncology Center. Mr. Gibson was a U.S. Army veteran and a lifelong resident of Shelbyville. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Shelbyville Rotary Club and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Mr. Gibson was a proud member of the 1947 graduating class of Shelbyville High School and graduated from University of Cincinnati in 1954, with a bachelor of science degree in architecture. A gathering of friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., in Shelbyville. A memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with Rev. Bob Campbell officiating. Services entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St., in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to Major Hospital Foundation for the Healing Garden, 150 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176 or First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
