John S. DeWitt

John S. DeWitt, 89, of Needham passed away Friday, September 21, 2012 at Major Hospital. Born May 23, 1923 in Marion County, he was the son of Harry and Ruth (Wesselius) DeWitt. He married Wilma L. Koopman on March 4, 1949, and she preceded him in death on February 12, 2002. Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis (husband, David) Kramm of Mora, Minnesota, Jane (husband, Gary) Dilk of Greenwood and Teddie (husband, Randy) Records of Batesville; sons, John (wife, Terri) DeWitt and Dan (wife, Karen) DeWitt, both of Indianapolis; sisters, Annie Bowman of Fairland and Gert Wickliff of Shelbyville; brother, Gus DeWitt of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Susan Waltz, Darry Waltz, William Waltz, Jill Harless, Andy Petry, Janica Maurer, Samuel DeWitt, Lisa Tandy, Rachel DeWitt, Travis DeWitt, Sarah Records, Amy Fasbinder and Staci Records; great-grandchildren, John Luther Waltz, Jacob Waltz, Drew Harless, Nash Harless, Caroline Petry and Annabelle Petry and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Hassell DeWitt and Peter DeWitt; and a sister, Hattie Stohry. John retired in 1991 from Royal Foods/Merico, Inc. in Indianapolis. He was a dairy farmer much of his life and in later years could always be found in the swing under the shade tree. He was a member of Bengal Christian Church where he rang the bell for many years. He attended Bible study and singing on Thursday afternoons at Shelbyville Community Church. John loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dan Owens officiating. Interment will be in Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Johnson County. Memorial contributions may be made to Bengal Christian Church, 3534 S. Shelby 750 W., Franklin, Indiana 46131 or Hospice of Decatur/Shelby, 1201 N. Lincoln St., Suite A, Greensburg, Indiana 47240.
