John Walsh Payne, 65, of Shelbyville passed away Monday, August 13, 2012 at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born November 28, 1946, in Charlotte, South Carolina, he was the son of John Walsh Sr. and Irene Agnes (Larsen) Payne. He married Regina “Sue” Johnson on March 22, 1966, and she preceded him in death on November 30, 2006.
Survivors include his sons, Charles Edward (wife, Aziza) Payne of Atlanta, Georgia and Shawn Darrel Payne of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Jessie Klimek of Shelbyville; brother, Donald Payne of St. Louis, Missouri; sister, Carol (husband, Hardy) Allen of Holly Springs, Mississippi; half-sister, Karen Payne of Little Rock, Arkansas; step-sisters, Linda Harp and Pamela Harp, both of Little Rock; grandchildren, Kento J., Daniel N., Grace L., Devin, Kristen, Sydney and Seth Payne and Dalenna J. Alires and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Payne moved to Shelbyville in 1994 and formerly owned and operated the Classie Lassie Antique Toys and Collectibles.
He retired in 2008 from ABF (Arkansas Best Freight), after 31 years of service.
Mr. Payne served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968 as an engineer.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Patriot Guard Riders and American Legion, he was formerly a member of the Teamsters Union.
Mr. Payne had several hobbies which included growing roses, raising pigeons, model trains, guns and motorcycles.
John loved animals.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with Chaplain Clyde Angel officiating.
Friends and family may gather from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2012 at the funeral home to process to Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison for military graveside rites.
