John William Comstock

John William Comstock passed away on February 27, 2012, at his home outside Hardinsburg in Orange County, Indiana. John was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, on February 13, 1942, to Edward Kenneth and Rita Fern (Cherry) Comstock. Survivors are his brother, Mark Edward (wife, Linda) Comstock of Arlington, Texas; his children, Edward "Ned" Kenneth Comstock, II of Waldron, Elizabeth Ann (husband,Tim) Miller of Columbus, and Emily Alice Allen of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Johnathan William Comstock of Greenwood, Catherine Naomi Miller and Jackson Herbert Miller both of Columbus; his former wife, Mary Alice (Kolkmeier) Comstock of Waldron; and his best friend and college roommate, James (wife, Barbara) McDonald and their children, Bill, Susan, Bob and David and their families of Orange County. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, step-mother, Edythe Louise (Young) Meloy Comstock, and a grandson, Quinton Timothy Miller. John attended Colescott Elementary, graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1960. He then went on to graduate from Indiana Central College in 1964 with a bachelor of science degree in social studies and a masters degree in education from Indiana University in 1975. He taught at Shelbyville High School from 1964 to 1969, New Palestine High School from 1969 to 1970. John was a cameraman at Channel 13 (WLWI) and Channel 4 (WTTV) from 1970 to 1975, occasionally being the voice of "Cookie" on Cowboy Bob's Corral. He then taught GED classes at the Indiana Department of Corrections in Westville until retiring in 1995. John was an amateur radio operator (HAM) with the call sign of K9KFL. He enjoyed talking with people from all over the world via the HAM radio. John had a steel trap memory, especially of AM Radio and TV, knowing the frequency and call letters of many radio stations. He was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and the McDonald family. John enjoyed surfing the internet, reading newspapers both online and in print, listening to 40's and 50's style music via YouTube and discussing politics. He was also an avid reader. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012, at the funeral home, with Pastor Patricia Ciupek and Pastor Jimmy Collins officiating. Interment will be in Miller Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Blue River Valley Amateur Radio Society.
