John William Tannehill, 84, of Fairland, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.
He was born May 3, 1937, in Hillsboro, Ohio, the son of Norman and Mary Jean (Walker) Tannehill. On August 5, 1972, he married Laura Eloise Woodard, and she preceded him in death on September 11, 2012.
John is survived by his adopted family, Mike and Ruth Woitas and their children, of Mankato, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to Laura, John was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Adra Lee Heise.
John graduated in 1955 from Hillsboro High School, and received associate and bachelors degrees from various colleges.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Cold War, as a radio teletype operator.
John was a very active member of the Fairland Grace Community Church.
He formerly worked for Mead, the railroad in shipping, and retiring from Inland Container, as the senior shipping logistics officer.
John enjoyed being a member of the Blue River Community Choir, Gideons International and the Fairland division of Shelby Senior Services.
He enjoyed traveling, hiking, and collecting stones and fossils.
John loved to continue his education and also enjoyed collecting train memorabilia.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Fairland Grace Community Church, 205 W. Washington St. in Fairland.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Pastor James Moore officiating.
Interment will be at Fairland Cemetery.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairland Grace Community Church.
