Larry Porter

Larry Porter, 82, a lifelong Shelbyville resident, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018. He was born April 28, 1935, in Shelbyville, the son of Kenneth and Annabelle (Williams) Porter. On December 21, 1983, he married Jenny Rich, and she survives. In addition of Jenny, Larry is survived by his daughter, Peggy Simpson and husband, Todd, of Shelbyville; son, Roger Porter of Shelbyville; step-daughters, Sheri White and husband, Dan, of Chico, California, and Michelle Adkins, of Shelbyville; step-son, Kerry Adkins of Denver, Colorado; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-daughter, Terri Foland; and brothers, Roger Porter and Jerry Porter. Larry graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1953, and attended Indiana University for pre-med studies. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Larry drove a school bus for Shelbyville Central School District for 50 years, and made many extra-curricular activity trips through-out the years, retiring in 2016. He was also formerly the Street Commissioner for the City of Shelbyville, owned and operated Porter Rental, and was a farmer. He was a member of the Shelbyville Lions Club, Shelbyville Rotary, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and a social member of the Knights of Columbus. Larry loved to play Euchre and Tonk at the Knights of Columbus on Monday evenings. He was a sports fanatic enjoying everything from golf to NASCAR. He also leaves behind his dogs, Teddy and Taffy. A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date. Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
