Lawrence "Joe" Haas

Lawrence "Joe" Haas, 79, of Shelbyville passed away Friday, February 27, 2009 at Wellstar Hospital in Austell, Georgia. Born March 31, 1929, in Ripley County, he was the son of Lawrence Francis and Violet (Land) Haas. He married Marianna (Titus) Weber, and she preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughters, Mitzi (husband, George) Hargrove of Atlanta, Ga., and Tywanna (husband, Steve) Smith of Shelbyville; brothers, Gordon Haas of Ohio, David Haas of Kansa, Larry Rush of Arizona and Mike Haas of Westport; sister, Becky Clark of Nebraska; granddaughters, Brandi Coulter, Jessica Nickels, Courtney Smith, Stephanie Smith, Bethany Smith and Tiffany Smith; eight stepchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ronald Haas and Robert Haas. Mr. Haas had been a heavy equipment operator for Local Union No. 103. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and Bible Holiness Church in Shelbyville. Mr. Haas reaced motorcycles and was the Indiana State Champion in 1964 and in 1965. He also raced at Daytona Motor Speedway and on Daytona Beach. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carmony-Ewing Chapel of Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St., Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Brother Joseph Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sandcreek Cemetery in Greensburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Holiness Church, 910 S. Tompkins St., Shelbyville, IN 46176
