Lois Clare Mitchell, 94, of Shelbyville, IN, passed away Monday, February 4, 2019. Prior to moving to Shelbyville, she had lived in Marion, IN, for many years.
Born on February 18, 1924, in Poneto, IN, she was the daughter of William Dowe and Mildred Lucile (Lambert) Henley.
Lois attended elementary school in Wells County, IN. She was graduated from Petroleum High School in 1942. She then entered nurses training at Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Fort Wayne, IN. Upon graduation in 1945, she was licensed as a Registered Nurse. Her career in nursing lasted more than 50 years. Lois was admired by colleagues, and well loved by her patients, many who would stop her on her off-duty hours to comment on how very much her competent care meant to them.
In addition to her career, Lois devoted countless hours of her time to causes for which she had a passion. She was a champion of civil rights, and served on the Grant County Civil Rights Commission. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Marion, where she enjoyed volunteering. After moving to Shelbyville, she attended First Presbyterian Church in Shelbyville.
Lois had many interests, including painting, gardening (she could grow anything), sewing, and collecting Depression glass.
Lois was courageous when confronted with adversity. But most importantly, she was a gentle, kind, and forgiving woman. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Lois is survived by her daughters, Ruth Lucile Price (husband, the late Albert Dennis Price) of Chicago, IL, Linda Bassett (husband Scott), of St. Paul, IN, and Susan C. Mitchell (husband, Chris Logan), of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, Richard L. Henley; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Wyatt Mitchell, her parents, and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, and as a tribute to Lois, her family requests that people consider spending time visiting with those who reside in long term care settings.
Cremation services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S, Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Inurnment will be at Grant Memorial Park in Marion.
A memorial service to celebrate Lois’s life will be held at a later date.
