Margaret Ann (Richardson) Newkirk, a lifelong resident of Shelby County, died Wednesday, October 19th at the age of 59.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Scott Newkirk of Shelbyville; children, Sarah Newkirk and Andrew Newkirk and wife, Natasha, all of Shelbyville; her grandson, Cason Newkirk; mother, Lora Jane (Cherry) Richardson of Shelbyville; siblings, Steve Richardson and wife, Jane, of Shelbyville, Beverly (Richardson) Carson and husband, Kevin, of Needham, Mary Lou (Richardson) Hildebrand and husband, Jay, of Waldron, and Tom Richardson and wife, Michelle, of Blue Ridge. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Albert Richardson.
Margaret was born in December of 1956 at Major Hospital and graduated from Shelbyville Senior High School in 1975.
She married William Scott Newkirk on August 27, 1983 at Lewis Creek Baptist Church.
Throughout her life, Margaret served the Shelby County community in many ways. For the past several years, Margaret worked for the Shelby County Tourism and Visitors Bureau as the Operations Manager. She truly enjoyed working on events such as the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay and sharing her passion for our community with others. Additionally, she was involved in Shelby County Reads, the Bookmark Book Club, Shelbyville First Friday, Blue River Sports Authority and volunteered at Benesse Oncology Center.
Margaret was also an active member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where she helped with student ministries, Vacation Bible School, and had recently started a support group for cancer survivors and caregivers.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 3718 E. Blue Ridge Road in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Pastor Robb Barlow officiating.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
