Marian L. McNew

Marian Louise (Fox) Gaines McNew, 93, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Heartway in Indianapolis. She was born June 27, 1921, in Shelby County, to Preston and Ida (Johnson) Fox. She married Howard Glen Gaines in 1939. She married Eugene C. McNew in 1973, and he preceded her in death in 2003. Survivors include four children: Julie Cummins of El Paso, Texas; Jane Huber and husband, John, of Shelbyville; John C. Gaines of Cotati, California; and Howard “Joe” Gaines and wife, Desirée, of Austin, Texas; three stepdaughters: Shirley McNew; Karen Dunn and husband, Ted; and Lisa Guidi and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Jennifer Vazquez, Rhonda Raters, Jody Cummins, Nichole Scott, Kelsey Gaines, Jack Gaines and Grace Gaines; five stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Suzanne Hinerdeer of Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands; siblings, Gene Fox, Fern Nickerson, Nina McKenney, Glen Fox, Harold Fox, Tom Fox, Alex Fox and Alisbel Fox. Marian graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1939. She was very proud that all of her children and stepchildren earned college degrees. Since she had not, she, at the age of 54, attended IUPUI, majoring in hotel and restaurant management and minoring in art. Marian was the curator at the Indiana University School of Law Library. She was the co-owner of the Homer Art Gallery and very active in the Homer Arts and Crafts Festival. She belonged to The Flower Lovers Garden Club, Eastern Star, Gray Ladies, Busy Bees Home Economics Club, several bridge groups in Shelbyville and in Florida, and was the former Regent of the Mary Mott Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Marian and Eugene traveled all over the world. They believed in having fun. Private services are planned for a later date.
