Marjorie Ann Smith, former resident of Shelbyville, passed away on her 93rd birthday on Wednesday, January 21, with her family by her side. Born in Gwynneville, Indiana on January 21, 1916, Marjorie was the daughter of the late Clarence Boyd and Earnestine (Earnest) Nigh, and step-daughter of the late Gene Cole. Marjorie was a graduate of Morristown High School, Indiana Central College and Butler University. On August 2, 1933 she married James Morris Smith (deceased) at the home of Reverend Cross. Marjorie taught school for 41 years primarily first grade for Shelbyville Central Schools, retiring in 1977. Thereafter, she volunteered at the Methodist home in Franklin, Indiana. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and is currently a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Majorie is survived by her children, Philip Smith and Ann (husband, Dan) Seefeldt; three grandchildren, Sally (husband, Tony) Bucher, Clint and Ben Seefeldt; one great-grandchild, Marley Bucher; one brother, Kay Gene Nigh of California; brother and sister-in-law, George and Lucinda (Smith) Peeler. She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Doyle Nigh. The family expresses its gratitude and admiration to the staff of Westminster Village North for their loving care of Marjorie over the last four years. At Marjorie's request she will have a private burial. A memorial celebration will be held in the chapel at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington Street, Shelbyville, Indiana at 2 pm on Saturday, January 24. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Parlor or immediately following the service. Another memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, January 25 at 2 pm at Westminster Village North, 11050 Presbyterian Drive, in the Sycamore Library. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that those who wish to honor Marjorie's memory contribute to the First United Methodist Church, St. Luke's United Methodist Church or Westminster Village North.
