Mary Ann Wasson

Mary Ann Wasson, 99, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Heritage House of Shelbyville. She was born February 27, 1921, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Fred and Margaret H. (Robins) Cossairt. In June of 1940, she married James Herbert Wasson, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 1991. Mary Ann is survived by her daughters, Judy Mitchell and husband, William, of Shelbyville, and Nancy Merry of Floyds Knobs; grandchildren, Elaine Bennett and husband, Brent, Greg Merry, Mark Mitchell, and Emily Clayton and husband, Kyle; great-grandchildren, Davis Merry, Emma Merry, Parker Bennett, Molly Bennett, Agatha Mitchell, Brynn Rohde, Evynn Rohde and Merynn Clayton. In addition to Herb, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Betty Thomas; and son-in-law, David Merry. Mary Ann graduated in 1939 from Shelbyville High School, and studied a floral design course and then worked at Cossairt Florist. She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Mary Ann was a wonderful helpmate to her husband, while he was a lay pastor at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church. She would often open her home to others and was known for her hospitality. Mary Ann retired, after 24 years of service in 1984, as head bookkeeper from First Federal Savings and Loan. She enjoyed reading, quilting and sewing. Mary Ann was a shining example, a problem solver and nurturer. She was independent, compassionate, loving and kind. Mary Ann always had a positive outlook on life. She was also a devoted caregiver to her husband during a lengthy illness. She was also a member of Delta Theta Tau. Private graveside services will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. A Celebration of Mary Ann’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at a later date. Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Mary Ann’s daughters would like to thank the caregivers at Heritage House for the wonderful care she received. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 124 W. Broadway St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
