Mary L. Hicks, 88, of Greenfield, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Crownpointe Senior Living in Greenfield.
She was born August 14, 1929, in Indianapolis, the daughter of James E. and Velma C. (Bell) Croasmun.
Mary is survived by her grandchildren, Laurel Early, Deanna Swafford, Jennifer Weintraut, Melissa Acher, Mary Jo Earl, Michael J. Murnan, Amanda Gilley, Bradley Pettijohn and Amy Caudill; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; nephews, Richard, William, Everett, Joe, Jim and John Croasmun; and special family friend, Larry Suits of Fairland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and father of her children, John T. Walters; husband, Harry Hicks; daughters, Linda S. Walters, Beverly A. Ward, Catherine J. Gilley and Diana L. Pettijohn; and brother, William J. Croasmun Sr.
Mary graduated from Warren Central High School in 1947.
She was a member of Acton United Methodist Church.
Mary was formerly employed by AAA.
Her true passion was caring for children, feeding them home-cooked nutritious hot meals and showing them loving care, while their parents were at work.
She loved to sing and sung in the choirs at Acton and Good Shepherd United Methodist Churches and the Greenfield Community Choir.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Acton United Methodist Church, 5650 Senour Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46239.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the church.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
