Mary Lou Martin, 96, of Shelbyville, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Major Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1910, in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Leslie VanPelt and Lydia (Koch) Allen. She married Earl Thornton Martin on Jan. 19, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1993. Survivors include two sons, James W. (wife, Jeannie) Martin of Arlington and Thomas A. (wife, Gwen) Martin of Englewood, Ohio; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Jayne Ann Werking, and one grandson. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker. She graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and Butler University, where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha and Panhellenic Council. Mrs. Martin was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and elder; the Association of University Women and Current Topic Club. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary W. Huffman officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
