Merrilyn “Maxine” Phillips, 87, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016 at Major Hospital.
She was born December 28, 1928, in Shelby County, the daughter of George and Oma (DeBaun) Gosch. On January 22, 1949, she married Paul Vernon Phillips, and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1992.
Maxine is survived by her daughter, Paula Phillips Chappelow of Shelbyville; brother, Wayne Gosch and wife, Barbara of Flat Rock; grandchildren, Andrea Carpenter Bright and husband, Patrick, of Greenwood, Katie Carpenter Miller and husband, Jeff, of Shelbyville, Ben Chappelow and wife, Mary Beth, of Eureka, Montana, Megan Chappelow Phares and husband, Jonathan, of Fortson, Georgia, Kelie Carpenter Baysinger and husband, Seth, and Arika Carpenter Held and husband, Derrick, both of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Emma Lynn Miller, Rylee Ann Miller, Charlotte Ann “Charli” Phares and Cora Elizabeth Chappelow; sons-in-law, Glenn “Chuck” Chappelow of Fortine, Montana and Mike Carpenter and wife, Debbie, of Shelbyville; and daughter-in-law, Teresa Carpenter of Shelbyville.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Debra Ann Phillips Carpenter; brother, Lewis Gosch; and friend, W. Robert Gahimer.
Maxine graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1946.
She was a member of First Christian Church, where she was a deaconess and a member of the women’s group. She helped with funeral meals and Bible school.
Maxine formerly worked at Camp Atterbury, Tippecanoe Press, Hub Shoes, Butler Nursing Home and H&R Block, retiring in April of 2009.
She enjoyed being a member of St. Joe Social Club. Maxine liked country music and liked going to Renfro Valley, Branson, Missouri and Nashville, Indiana.
Maxine loved to cook, especially for the holidays and family celebrations.
She loved her grandchildren and the time she spent with them.
Maxine was preceded by her dog, Oscar.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the First Christian Church, 118 W. Washington St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Revs. Bill Horner and Nathan Wilson officiating.
Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery in Shelby County.
