Mertie B. Long, 91, of Morristown, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.
Mertie was born June 22, 1921 in Rison, Arkansas. She was the daughter of William E. and Carrie Elta Henderson. She married Harlan L. “Grubby” Long on April 4, 1946, and he preceded her in death on February 25, 1989.
Survivors include her sons, Max L. Long of Morristown and Jeff W. (wife, Linda) Long of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Joan H. Sampson of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and Martha (husband, George) Phares of Kokomo; sister, Ruth Henry of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Myrna Lea Long in 1951; six sisters and one brother.
Mertie graduated from White Hall High School in Arkansas; the University of Tennessee-School of Nursing in Memphis, and later went back to school at the University of Indianapolis for Parish Nursing in 2002.
She was a member of Morristown United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Morristown American Legion, Say-Go Club and Mu Beta book Club.
Mrs. Long was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, as a nurse in the Army Corp obtaining the rank 2nd Lieutenant
She was formerly a nurse at the “Julietta” Marion County Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Morristown United Methodist Church, 221 S. Washington St. in Morristown
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the church, with Pastor Jeri Barrett-Thomas officiating.
Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery.
