Mildred T. Niebel McDonald

Mildred T. Niebel McDonald, 93, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Major Hospital. Born April 9, 1912, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of the late Samus and Pearl (Pile) Mohr. She married Sumner Niebel in 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1950. She married Claude McDonald in 1956, and he preceded her in death in 1965. Survivors include one son, Gene Niebel of Edinburgh; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Niebel of Shelbyville; one sister, Odetta Nay of Edinburgh; three grandchildren, Jan Meyer, Jean Ann Linville and Curtis Niebel; nine great-grandchildren, Joni Slusser, Allen Meyer, Tiffanie Meyer, Heather Meyer, Juli Carver, Chad Linville, Jessica Linville, Gregg Linville and Zachary Niebel; and two great-great-grandchildren, Christian Linville and Cameron Linville. She also was preceded in death by one son, Glen Niebel; two sisters, Lela Pruitt and Florence Mohr; three brothers, Dale Mohr, John Mohr and Kenneth Mohr; one grandson, Gregg Niebel; and one great-granddaughter, Jina Meyer. She was a homemaker and had been a teacher at the former Major Elementary School and the Little Marion Elementary School, where she taught third grade, retiring in 1978. Prior to that, she had taught at the former Flat Rock School, Hopewell School in Johnson County and St. Paul School. Mrs. Niebel had been a volunteer at Major Hospital. She graduated from Mount Auburn High School and Butler University, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. Mrs. Niebel was a member of First Christian Church, Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, Coterie, Shelby County Garden Club, Naamah chapter of Eastern Star and Shelbyville Business and Professional Women?s Club. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Horner officiating. Interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Shelby County. Memorial contributions may be made to Shelbyville Central Teachers Association Scholarship Fund, in care of Freeman Family Funeral Home, Carmony-Ewing Chapels, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.
