Minnie Lillian Wiley, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2012 at her home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Wiley was born December 24, 1923 in Pana, Illinois to William and Harriett (Bolton) Hawker. She married Clyde “Skeet” Wiley on May 27, 1950 in Shelbyville at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, with whom she resided, after moving from Pana in 1947. Mr. Wiley preceded her in death on October 7, 2005.
She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Wiley of Shelbyville; son, Jeff (wife, Kathy) Wiley of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Angel Ambrose Buchberger of Normal, Illinois, Robert Ambrose of Cummings, Georgia, Gayle Hanlin of Leroy, Illinois, Will Brunner of Annandale, Virginia and Drew Brunner of Shelbyville; ten great-grandchildren, Anna Buchberger, Gabrielle, Mackenzie, Addison and Caden Ambrose, Jorgia, Allyson and Megan Hanlin and Brett and Matt Helfrich; and a nephew, William Linville.
Mrs. Wiley was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Linda Wiley Ambrose; sister, Imogene Linville; and a niece, Patricia Linville.
After moving to Shelbyville, Mrs. Wiley worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Co., G.C. Murphy’s and Max’s Grocery Store. In 1950, she and her husband purchased the former Cuppitt’s Grocery Store at 835 S. Noble St. Together they operated Wiley’s Grocery for 36 years, retiring in 1986.
Besides worked alongside her husband in their grocery business, Mrs. Wiley enjoyed being a homemaker. She was very creative in her hobbies of drawing, writing, cooking, sewing and gardening.
Mrs. Wiley also enjoyed bowling for many years with the Ladies’ Wednesday 6:00 league, golfing with her husband, dancing, and playing cards with family and friends.
She was a fan of Indiana University basketball, crossword puzzles, and a devoted mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Wiley was a member of First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2012 at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Concord Cemetery.
