Phillip "Darrell" Jackman

Phillip “Darrell” Jackman, 92, of Fairland, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville. He was born May 18, 1922, in Martin County, the son of Merl and Gertrude M. (Hawkins) Jackman. He married Margie Johnson and she preceded him in death on November 12, 1969; later he married Betty Casanova and she preceded him in death on May 1, 2000. On April 5, 2003, he married Mary Alice (Kemper) Perry and she survives. He is also survived by his sons, Ron Jackman and wife, Linda, of Fairland and Ron Stackhouse and wife, Patricia of Pleasant View; brothers, Dean Jackman of Topac, Arizona and Drexell Jackman of French Lick; sister, Anita Hoggatt of Fairland; grandchildren, Nicole Jackman, Jeremy Jackman, Stacy Downing and husband, John, JoAnna Stackhouse and Ross Stackhouse and wife, Angela; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Michelle, Alyssa, Austin, Norah and Bayleigh. Mr. Jackman was also preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters. He graduated from Shoals High School in 1941. Mr. Jackman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the water during World War II. He was a member of Acton Baptist Church, Orange County American Legion and Teamster Union No. 135. Mr. Jackman retired from Colonial Bakery, as a truck driver, after 25 years of service in 1978. He had formerly worked in construction and building bridges. He grew up helping on the family farm. He enjoyed restoring old trucks and cars, gardening and traveling to Florida in the winter. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the funeral home, with Pastor Clyde McCammack officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Abbeydale in Orange County, with military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to Acton Baptist Church, 11039 Exchange Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46259.
