Ray Glen Sweet Sr., 83, of Greensburg died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his home.
Born June 1, 1926, in Shelbyville, he was the son of James Blain and Cecile (Ewick) Sweet. He married Marie Anderson on April 21, 1950, and she survives.
Other survivors include his children, Earl W. Sweet of Adams, Ray (wife, Joni) Sweet Jr., Oren Sweet, Glenda Sweet and Jackie (husband, Brian) Ruble, all of Greensburg, Barb (husband, Verna) Hatfield, Jabzy, Ky, and Carol (husband, Christopher) Shepherd of Shelbyville; sister, Ruth Tucker of Shelbyville; brothers, Don (wife, Sally) Sweet of Shelbyville and Bob (wife, Ann) Sweet of San Antonio, Texas; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Carol ?Annie? Sweet; brothers, James Sweet II, Arnold Sweet, Jack Sweet and Billy Sweet; sisters, Vivian Fuell and Justine Aulby; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sweet was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1944 until retiring in 1968. He received many honors including a bronze star medal. After retiring, he and his wife maintained a farm and opened a restaurant, Sweet?s Cafe, in Waldron.
He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1943.
Mr. Sweet was a member of Welsh-Crawley-Kramer American Legion No. 129 and attended Living Water Ministries, both in Greensburg.
He enjoyed travel, woodworking and raising and breeding Maltese dogs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with pastors Ray Sweet III and Bill Leak officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
