Raymond F. “Bud” Munger, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Heritage House of Shelbyville.
He was born January 29, 1922, in Shelbyville. Raymond was the son of Raymond E. and Golda (Ice) Munger. He married his wife of 65 years, Harriet H. Hammat on July 20, 1947, and she survives.
Other survivors include his sons, William R. (wife, Marianne) Munger and Steven J. (wife, Glenda) Munger, both of Shelbyville, Jeffrey K. (wife, Gail) Munger and Timothy J. (wife, Becky) Munger, both of Greenwood; a daughter, Patricia A. (husband, Keith) Walker of Traverse City, Michigan; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Dorothy Munger.
Bud graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1940, where he was the recipient of the Paul Cross Award in basketball, also lettering in cross country, baseball and tennis. He attended Ball State University for two years, went to serve his country for three years, and returned to Ball State graduating in 1947, with a degree in education. While at Ball State University he lettered in basketball, tennis and baseball.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II in Washington D.C., Hawaii and Guam.
Mr. Munger taught from 1948 to 1958 at Sand Creek, Michigan and from 1958 to 1984 at Shelby Central School, retiring in 1984 after 36 years of service.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Delta Phi Sigma Fraternity, the Ball State Varsity Club and U.S. Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at the funeral home, with the Revs. Reid Walker and Robert Campbell officiating. Military gravesides rites will be conducted by the local veterans organizations.
Interment will be in Liberty Cemetery.
