Richard Allen Carlton

Richard Allen Carlton, 81, of Morristown passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 at Major Hospital in Shelbyville. Born November 21, 1929, in Hancock County, he was the son of Elmer and Florence (Noe) Carlton. He married Patricia Nugent on July 1, 1950, and she survives. Other survivors include his son; Roger A. (wife, Donna) Carlton of Fountaintown; daughter, Diana L. Terry of Morristown; brothers, Robert E. (wife, Tonya) Carlton, William C. (wife, Beverlee) Carlton, and Gene W. (Patty) Carlton, all of Morristown; sister, Joann (husband, Lynn) Tyner of Morristown; grandsons, Royce, Ryan, Reece; granddaughter, Megan (husband, Kyle) Engleking; and great-grandchildren, Madison and Wesley. He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandson, Kevin Terry. Mr. Carlton was a lifelong Shelby County resident and a 1947 graduate of Morristown High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a flight engineer C-19 who received Airman of the Month award. Mr. Carlton was a self-employed heavy equipment operator and owned American Contractors and American Manor. He also initiated the first modern industry to Morristown, then known as IPC. He was a member of Morristown United Methodist Church and a former member of the Morristown Lions Club, where he received Person of the Year award, and Morristown Chamber of Commerce past president and Man of the Year. He also served on the Shelby County Board of Zoning Appeals from 1978 to 2001 and was awarded Outstanding Service to Shelby County. Graveside services will be at 4 pm, Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown, with Rev. Amy Artis officiating and military graveside rites will be conducted. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Feed My Lambs Program, in care of Morristown Methodist Church, 221 S. Washington St., Morristown, Indiana 46161 or Boys and Girls Club of Morristown, 210 S. Washington St., Morristown, Indiana 46161. Arrangements were entrusted To Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St., in MOrristown.
