Richard W. “Dick” Jones, Sr., 86, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Cypress Run in Morristown.
He was born October 8, 1927, in Indianapolis, the son of Floyd Sr. and Hazel (Nail) Jones. He married Joanne Stites on March 15, 1952, and she preceded him in death on November 26, 1989.
Survivors include his sons, Richard W. Jones, Jr., Robert W. Jones and wife, Monique and Jeremy C. Jones and wife, Ashley, all of Shelbyville; daughters, Deborah S.. Jones, Cynthia L. Murphy and Mary H. Massey and husband, Marc, all of Shelbyville, Rebecca D. Jones of Bloomington and Christina N. Brown and husband, Marcus of Indianapolis; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Hardin; and brother, Robert D. Jones.
Dick graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1945, and attended Indiana University in Bloomington for two years studying pre-law.
He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War, and was discharged in 1952.
Dick was a member of First United Methodist Church and Town and Country Christian Church, Fraternal Order of Police #84 and Theta Chi Fraternity at Indiana University. He was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
He retired from the Indiana State Police as a Lieutenant in 1982, with 26 years of service, and from Homeland Security in January of 2007, after 23 years of service.
Dick enjoyed antiques and refinishing furniture, he was also interested in the war history.
He loved spending time with his family.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
