He was a soldier, in many ways.
SFC (Retired) Robert Dean Sherrill of Shelbyville passed away Monday, January 14, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 43.
Robert was born April 15, 1964, in Anderson. At age 19, he joined the Army, which took him to Fort Bragg, NC, Marion and, eventually Shelbyville. Robert had 23 years of full-time active duty military service as a supply/logistics technician in the Indiana Army National Guard. Robert's last tour of duty was in 2004, when he planned and executed logistical support for more than 180 soldiers to Bosnia.
After retiring from the Army, he came a production associate at Keihin in Greenfield.
Robert was an active member of Crossroads Community Church in Shelbyville.
He was an avid reader, action film aficionado, skilled gamer and rock music fan.
Bob was also known by his church, friends and family as "Mr. Fix It" (Bob the Builder).
He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, which he would display until the end.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; three sons Jason Sherrill (wife, Kristi) of Fort Eustis, VA and Jeff Sherrill (wife, Sheena) and Justin Sherrill, all of Elwood; Mother Judith Sherrill of Alexandria and father William Sherrill (wife, Kandi) of Lapel; sister Christy Lightfoot (husband, Mark) of Anderson; brother David Sherrill (wife, Michelle) of Muncie; step-daughter Heather Carbaugh (fiance David McCutcheon), Federal Way, WA; step-son Joseph Carbaugh currently active duty Army in Iraq; two grandchildren Korbyn and Kolton of Fort Eustis, VA and one granddaughter on the way, several special nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Verne and Betty Degner and paternal grandparents, Dent and Anna May Sherrill.
A gathering of friends will be Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison St. Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
Memorial services will be at 12 noon Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sanctuary of Shelbyville (S.O.S.), 137 E. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
A meal will be served at the American Legion Post immediately following the service.
