Robert Emmett Moore, 92, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Major Hospital.
Born February 5, 1919, in Shelbyville, he was the son of Robert and Pearl (Edwards) Moore. He married Bette Harding on April 5, 1942 at Trinity Methodist Church in Shelbyville, and she survives.
Other survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Lyles of Laguna Beach, California; sons, Gregory (wife, Carol) Moore of Newark, Delaware and Jerome (wife, Chris) Moore of Issaquah, Washington; grandchildren, Jerry Lyles, Ann (Lyles) MacPhail, Jennifer (Lyles) Titus, Amanda Moore, Carrie Moore, Robert Moore, Michael Moore and D'Arci Parker and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and a sister.
Mr. Moore was a lifelong Shelbyville resident.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II as a radarman on a minesweeper in the Pacific.
Mr. Moore was a partner of the former Philmore Corp. on East Broadway Street and later the plant supervisor for Nukraft Corp. He served as director of buildings and grounds and transportation of Shelbyville Central Schools from 1959 to 1978. He served on the Shelbyville Central Schools board from 1954 to 1957 and was instrumental in acquiring the land and building Shelbyville High School and Coulston Elementary School. After retirement from the school system, he worked part time at Inlow Clinic, taking care of the heating, air conditioning and lighting systems. He and his wife also owned and operated Arrowhead Ceramics.
He was a former member of Forest Hill Cemetery board for many years and was a member of Shelby County Historical Society and the American Legion.
Mr. Moore was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and started the CCC (Coffee, Cookies and Conversation) group for ages 55 and over.
He enjoyed woodworking and was privileged to go to his woods and cut oak, cherry and walnut trees, from which he made three grandfather clocks.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
