Robert G. “Bob” Newton, 90, of Waldron, a lifelong Shelby County resident, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Waldron Health and Rehab in Waldron.
He was born March 15, 1926, in Waldron, the son of Forrest and Jennie (Lowe) Newton. On September 25, 1949, he married Lois Pauline Cole, and she preceded him in death on January 10, 2013.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Debbie Williams and husband, Kevin, and Diane Hartman and husband, Dennis, both of Waldron; grandchildren, Chad Williams and Kim, Eric Williams and Sarah, Dustin Hartman and Amanda, Nick Hartman and Jennifer, A.J. Newton and Maraysa, and Craig Newton and Amanda; great-grandchildren, Dalen Williams, Braylon Williams, Maleah Williams, Anna Williams, Addison Hartman, Owen Hartman, Brody Hartman and Cole Hartman; daughter-in-law, Anita Newton of Shelbyville; sister-in-law, Mavern Newton of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and only son, Tony G. Newton.
Bob graduated from Waldron High School in 1944.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 70.
Bob was a member of Waldron United Methodist Church for 84 years, and served as a trustee and on the board of directors.
He was passionate about farming and was a lifelong farmer. Bob formerly owned Newton Equipment from 1964 to 1974. He served as a Shelby County Commissioner for two terms from 1981 to 1988 and the Shelby County Drainage Board. Bob also served on the Shelby Eastern School Board for three years, 1973, 1974 and 1975 and was a member of the Van Pelt Cemetery Board.
He was also a 50 year member of the Waldron Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 217 and in March of 2016 became a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite.
Bob enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
He loved to spend time with his grandchildren while camping at Liberty, Indiana in the summers.
Bob also leaves behind his dog, Robbie.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville with Masonic rites recited at 6 p.m. and from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2016 at Waldron United Methodist Church, 202 W. Washington St. in Waldron.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with Rev. Cameron Manifold officiating.
Interment will be at Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County, with military honors by the local military committee.
