Robert Jesse “Bob” King, 77, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, January 29, 2016 at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 17, 1938, in Shelbyville, the son of Kenneth Clifford and Mary Dorothy (Strickler) King. He married his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Bell on June 11, 1967 at Emerson Avenue Baptist Church in Indianapolis, and she survives.
Bob is also survived by his daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Ballard of Collierville, Tennessee and Roberta “Bobbi” Watson and husband, Ryan, of Shelbyville; brother, Kenneth James “Jim” King and wife, Debbie, of Shelbyville; stepmother, Jeane Leclerc of Shelbyville; half-sisters, Rita Weaver of Shelbyville and Millie Haehl and husband, Richard, of Zionsville; half-brother, Tim King and wife, Brenda, of Indianapolis; sister-in-law, Pam King of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Reagan Ballard and Kendall Ballard, both of Collierville, and Landon Watson and Delaney Watson, both of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William W. “Bill” King.
Bob graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1956. He graduated from Franklin College, where he lettered in tennis and received his Master’s degree from Indiana University.
He was a member of West Street United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge No. 2118, National Education Association, Indiana State Teacher’s Association and AARP. Bob was also a Kentucky Colonel.
Bob taught for 30 years, 1963 to 1993 at Bartholomew County School Corporation. He and his wife owned and operated Café Coffee Break from 1969 to 2013. Bob had been working for CICOA until he got sick in November.
He loved the outdoors, walking and working in the yard. He especially loved to play “HORSE” with his grandchildren, he had a favorite shooting spot “where he always swished the ball.”
Bob enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, IU Hoosiers and Butler University ballgames.
He will be forever loved and missed and remembered for his funny jokes.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the funeral home, with Rev. Ian Farnsley officiating.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
