Roger Allen Slifer

Roger Allen Slifer, 60, of Morristown, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born November 11, 1954, in Shelbyville, the son of Robert E. and Hazel M. (Tillison) Slifer. Roger is survived by his father of Morristown; sisters, Connie E. Carlton and Linda Mummert and husband, Anthony, both of Morristown; brother, Michael D. Slifer and wife, Emma, of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; and brother-in-law, R. Elmer Carlton. Roger graduated from Morristown High School in 1973. He was a member of Fountaintown Christian Church. Roger was a writer, editor, letterer and colourist of comic books, animation and video games. He began his career at Marvel Comics in the mid-1970s. In February of 1981, he began working for DC Comics, writing the comic, Omega Man and co-creating, Lobo. He served as editor for DC Comics, in 1984 and 1985. While working at Sunbow Entertainment, he was the supervising producer, story editor and writer of Jem and the Holograms and My Little Pony; he also produced and story edited G.I. Joe Extreme, Transformers, Street Fighter, Conan the Adventurer and Bucky O’Hare. He then moved to California, where he wrote freelance and continued his work on Lobo and other animated projects. Roger co-produced the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh. He also was a writer and consultant in the video game industry, with his most recent being “Injustice, Gods Among Us”. There are three fictional characters named in part after Roger; they are Rog 2000, Slifer, Fear-Monger, and the Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card, Slifer the Sky Dragon. On June 23, 2012, Roger was severely injured in a hit and run accident in Santa Monica, California and returned to Indiana in 2013 to be near his family. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the funeral homes, with Pastor Fred Hickman officiating. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Hickory Creek in Greensburg, for the wonderful care, compassion and love they showed Roger.
