Ruth Ellen Marshall, 84, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove, Indiana. Born July 7, 1924 in Noble Township, Shelby County, Indiana, she was the daughter of George Wright and Esther (Beagle) Alley. She married Robert D. Marshall, and he preceded her in death on October 28, 1980. Survivors includer her sons, Dr. Thomas R. Marshall of Dallas, TX, Dr. David G. (wife, Christy) Marshall of Glen Arbar, MI, and James R. (wife, Barbara) Marshall of Shelbyville; daughters, Karen S. Marshall of Indianapolis, and Dr. Nancy E. (husband, John Sloan) Marshall of Webster Grove, MO; grandchildren, Aram (wife, Lauren) Marshall of Tucson, AZ, Dr. Erica Marshall of West Lafayetta, IN, LTJG R. Deacon Marshall of San Diego, CA, Sara Marhall of Rushville, Jack Sloan, Claire Sloan and Mark Sloan, all of Webster Grove; great-grandchilddaughter, Aida Ruth Marshall of Tucson and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Samuel Alley and Joshua Alley, and sister, Alice Gail Sadler. Mrs. Marshall graduated from Waldron High School in 1942; Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1944; and received Bachelor and Master degrees from Indiana University School of Nursing. She had been a clinical instructor at the Indiana University School of Nursing; worked for Metro Health Behavior Health Services for several years as a licensed marriage and family therapist and later had an independent mental health practice retiring in 2008. Mrs. Marshall was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, Chapter BL of the PEO Sisterhood, Mary Mott Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Waldron Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, several professional organizations including American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and past president of Tri Kappa Sorority. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, playing the piano and her family and friends. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Carmony-Ewing Chapel of Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, Indiana and from 9:30 to 1 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, with Drs. David Marshall and Rick Miller officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Strand Theater, 215 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176 or First United Methodist Church Music Fund, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
