Sandra J. Sponsel, 78, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Heritage House of Shelbyville.
She was born March 27, 1936, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Uriah and Doris T. (Brock) Haskett. On December 18, 1954, she married Chester E. Sponsel, and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1994.
Survivors include her children, Stephanie Joest and husband, Ron, and Jeff Sponsel and wife, Danae, both of Shelbyville; five granddaughters, Abigail Garrett and Hannah Bowlin, both of Shelbyville, Cassandra Gilford of Indianapolis, Ashley Sponsel of Cleveland, Ohio and Kari Moore of Fort Worth, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb, William, Allie and Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Ricky; and great-granddaughter, Katelyn Moore.
Mrs. Sponsel attended West St. United Methodist Church.
After graduating from Warren Central High School, she worked as a Spanish translator for F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company and as a bookkeeper for George Barr Construction and Laibe Supply/Rainflow Systems in Indianapolis. Most recently, she worked part-time at Sponsel Photography from 1991-2014.
Among the many things she enjoyed, besides family, were playing cards with her friends and visiting at Senior Services, making quilts for her grandchildren, painting in oils and summertime canning from the garden.
A gathering of friends will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 2014 at New Life United Methodist Church, 6145 N 400 W, Fairland, Indiana.
A Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, with Rev. Ben Biggs officiating.
