Sara Delight Brown Adams, 79, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at her daughter’s home. Mrs. Adams was born on January 8, 1937, in Shelbyville, Indiana to the late Herrin H. Brown and Mary Louise Small Brown. Delight graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1954. Following graduation, she attended Franklin College where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta National Sorority. In February 1956 Delight married Merlin S. Adams and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage until his death in 2011. Delight faithfully served her community in numerous capacities. She was elected two terms to the office of City Clerk Treasurer for the city of Shelbyville and served in that role from 1972 until 1979. Delight was the first woman in Shelbyville, Indiana history to run for the office of Mayor. She also served on the Board of S.C.U.F.F.Y. for several years. Delight was also the past President of the Parent Teachers Association. From 1981 to 1984 she was the Deputy County Auditor for the Shelby County Government as well as the Town Administrator of Hope, Indiana. Mrs. Adams also worked in the real estate field and was Realtor and Outstanding Sales Person for Century 21 from 1987 to 1993. Delight spent over 20 years working as a senior tax advisor for HR Block. She loved visiting her son in Florida and going out to dinner with friends and family. Delight treasured the time she spent with her family, friends and her beloved dogs. In addition to her parents and husband, Delight was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ralph H. Brown and Ethel Belle Gunning Brown; maternal grandparents, George Small and Mary Fagel Small; and Merlin’s parents, John L. “Cookie” Adams and Hazel Webster Adams. Mrs. Adams is survived by her two children, Matthew Herrin Adams and wife, Debbie Hentoff Adams of Delray Beach, FL and Mary Kathleen Adams of Winston-Salem, NC. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Forsyth County, especially all of the South Team members led by Kathleen O’Brien; her loving caregivers, Crystal Ruiz and Renee Erbe; the staff at AL Nursing; devoted friend Peggy Jean Jarvis, Pastor Bill Hoyle, and all of her family and friends for the love and support shown to Delight and her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Forsyth County, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Clemmons Rd., Clemmons, NC 27012. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 and Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony Ewing Chapel are assisting the family of Mrs. Adams.
