Shirley Aileen Mendenhall, 75, of Boggstown, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at her home.
Born December 24, 1934, in Bengal, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Bonnie (Parker) Dine. She married Donal "Bud" Mendenhall on May 31, 1958, and he survives.
Other survivors include her son, Joseph Gardner (wife, Robin) Mendenhall of Boggstown; sisters, Charlotte Lou Dine and Joan (husband, Gene Scheffler, both of Shelbyville; brother-in-law, John J. Mendenhall of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Joseph G. Jr, (wife, Jamie) Mendenhall of Fort Wayne and Zechariah K. Mendenhall of Boggsotwn; and great-granddaughters, Kaden Paige Mendenhall, Aalya Mackenzie Mendenhall and Raely Amara Mendenhall.
Mrs. Mendenhall taught for a total of 37 years, one year at Hendricks Township in the Southwestern School District and 36 years at Triton where she taught all grades from one through 12, retiring in 1995.
She graduated from Boggstown High School in 1953; Franklin College in 1957, with a degree in business and economics; and Indiana University in 1964, with a master's in education.
Mrs. Mendenhall was a member of Bengal Christian Church, Delta Zeta Sorority; held various positions in the Triton Class Room Teachers Association and Shelby County Teachers Association; chairman for Shelby County Association for Academic Achievement, president and treasurer of Shelby County Retired Teachers; and charter member and board member of Joseph Boggs Historical Society.
She received the Outstanding Teacher Award in Indiana from the Indiana Legislature.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Dr. H.L. Robbins officiating.
Interment will be in Boggstown Cemetery.
