January 13, 1927 — May 12, 2013

Sonia Lee (Short) Hutton, 86, went to be with the Lord on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013. She spent her final days surrounded by her loving family. Born January 13, 1927, in Danville, Illinois, Sonia was the second child of Kenneth V. and Blanche (Marshall) Short. She was raised in Indianapolis and attended Shortridge High School. In 1942 she married her childhood sweetheart, Bill Hutton. After Bill returned from World War II, they settled in Ben Davis. They came to Shelbyville in 1955 to run the Alcazar Restaurant above the Strand Theater. She later worked at Heritage Children’s Home and taught kindergarten and first grade at the Lighthouse Fellowship Center on Washington Street. They were among the first residents in Wellington Heights where they lived until retiring to Fort Myers, Florida in 1985. In Florida she learned to swim. She and Bill were active at the Senior Center and their neighborhood association. She spent many hours in her garden and enjoyed sharing their home in the sunshine with visiting friends and family. They returned to Shelbyville in 2005 and resided at McKay Manor. She and Bill attended Shelbyville Community Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, who passed away on March 30, 2013; her brother, Kenneth V. Short, Jr.; and her sister Nona May Nix. She is survived by her eight daughters, Billie (Greg) Fowl, Sheila (Ronald) Fullerton, Chris (Richard) Fischman, Connie (Ronnie) Roszell, Linda (Rudy) Klare, Lonna (Mike Munsel) Hutton, Marcia (Ed) Kellam and Laura (Scott) Carmony; as well as 24 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Gloria Dixon and Alora Woods; and two brothers, Alva Short and James Short. Her faith and love of family defined who she was and was the focus of her life. Her unconditional love, acceptance and unwavering support and her boundless energy will be sorely missed. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St in Shelbyville.
