Former Shelbyville resident Sue Ann (Hawkins) Muth passed away May 30 in Bloomington, Ill. She was 84.
She was born March 30, 1929 at home, in Morristown, Ind. Her husband, Victor B. Muth, passed away May 31, 2012. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last year.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Belva (Pitts) Hawkins and Ralph Hawkins.
She is survived by her children, Dan Muth of Atlanta, Ga., Diane Muth Thompson, Hudson, Ill. and Dr. David Muth of Sarasota, Fla. Sue was “Mam” to seven grandchildren: Carlan Loeb-Muth of Marietta, Ga., Reilly Loeb-Muth of Kennesaw, Ga., Jess Thompson of Berlin, Germany, Tyler Thompson of Bloomington, Ill., Ian Thompson of Chicago, Rachel and Katheryne Muth of Sarasota. She was the sister of Jackie (Hawkins) Polakoff and brother-in-law of Don Polakoff, Shelbyville.
She graduated Shelbyville High School in 1947--- the year the Golden Bears won the state basketball championships and shared stories about that time. She attended Ball State University.
Many students at Shelbyville High School remember Sue as a friendly face in the school library. She was the library assistant in the 1970s and 1980s and was always eager to help students not only find books but also by providing an ear, a laugh and an easy smile.
Sue and Vic were regulars at Shelbyville Little League and Knot Hole games, watching their sons play or coach baseball.
After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Bradenton Florida, where Sue lived until last year. They lived on Sarasota Bay and enjoyed watching hundreds of sunsets. Even though she lived in Florida for 30 years, she still enjoyed following Indiana University basketball and the Indianapolis Colts.
Sue enjoyed genealogy and traced her family’s ancestors to the Mayflower. She compiled and researched an extensive family tree--all before the internet and the availability of on-line research tools. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and for many years created handmade gifts for her family.
She enjoyed cards and was an avid bridge player. She taught younger family members the fine art of euchre. She enjoyed chocolate, ice cream and martinis. The Muth’s Christmas Eve open house parties in Shelbyville were epic. She was not shy.
Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Freeman Family Funeral Home, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.
Graveside service to follow at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
