Thelma “Dee” Gray, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away, with her three children at her bedside, Monday, May 19, 2014 at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.
She was born August 11, 1925, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Edmond and Martha (Featherstone) Smith. Dee met Robert E. Gray and fell in love, they married and shared 37 years together until his sudden death.
Survivors include her son, Richard A. Gray of Shelbyville, with whom she lived for the past 13 years; daughters, Sanna L. Kohler of Indianapolis and Susan R. Gray of Speedway; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her beloved companion of nearly 20 years, George “Dewey” Mohr of Shelbyville.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, David A. Swails.
Dee was a former member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and First United Methodist Church. She occasionally attended St. Joseph Catholic Church with her son.
She formerly worked at Spenax and IPC. Later she worked in retail at JC Penney’s and the former Jester’s Department Store.
The greatest joy of Dee’s life was being a good wife and mother, keeping a clean house and doing the laundry. Outside of the home, her favorite things to do were eating out and shopping at JC Penney's.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Campbell and her son officiating.
Interment will be at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County.
