Verna Marie Dodd, 79, of Homer, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017, at Flat Rock River Lodge in Rushville.
She was born May 8, 1937, in Indian Cove, Idaho, the daughter of Lloyd and Viola (Hampton) Wesson. On April 11, 1954, she married Floyd E. Dodd, Sr., and he preceded her in death on March 13, 2002.
Verna is survived by her sons, Mike Smith and wife, Sheila, of Henderson, Tennessee, Floyd “Junior” Dodd, Jr. and wife, Janet, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Raymond Dodd and wife, Larrianne, of Rushville, and James “Jimmy” Dodd of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; daughter, Debra Smith and husband, Rick, of Waldron; grandchildren, Bridgette Norvell and husband, Dustin, Brittany Dodd, Bryant Dodd, Raychel Gates and husband, Josh, Claire Dodd, Austin Dodd, Mykenzie Dodd, Taryn Ball and husband, Monty, Danielle Mason and Michael Dodd; great-grandchildren, Trynitee K. Dodd-Norvell, Erica Mason, Evan Mason, Tryntonn Norvell, Syrissa Dodd, Terrance Springman, Syrena Dodd, Aniyah Dodd, Abigail Gates, Jordan Spradlin, Adalyn “Addy” Ball and Little “A”; and her best friend, Della Porter of Rushville.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond Wesson and James Hunter Wesson; and granddaughter, Tiffany Smith.
Verna graduated from Glenns Ferry Consolidated High School in Glenns Ferry, Idaho.
She was a member of Faith Community Church of God in Manilla.
Verna retired as a postmaster in 1997, serving for 22 years. After retirement, she worked for Comfort Keepers from 2002 to 2012. Later, while at Flat Rock River Lodge she served as the patients advocate.
She was a wonderful cook, her specialty was fried chicken.
Verna enjoyed crocheting Christmas gifts and sewing her granddaughter’s Easter dresses. She also liked to travel.
Most of all, she loved helping people and her door was always open.
Verna loved her children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the funeral home, with Charles Justice officiating.
Interment will be at Hurst Cemetery in Rush County.
Verna’s family truly appreciates the love and care provided to her by the staff of Flat Rock River Lodge.
