Vincent R. Montgomery, 94, of Shelbyville, met his Heavenly Father on Friday, November 25, 2016.
He was born March 10, 1922, in Kouts, the son of the late Clem Sr. and Roxie (Russell) Montgomery. He married the love of his life, Opal Tucker on January 11, 1942, and she preceded him in death on August 17, 2001, after 62 years of a wonderful marriage.
Vincent is survived by his loving daughter, Marcia Kuhn and husband, Dr. Thomas, of Shelbyville; son, Larry Montgomery and wife, Shirley, of Batesville; sisters, Mary Lou Baker of Holts Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Kim Owens and husband, Jeff, Terry Kuhn and wife, Roberta, Jennifer Hancock and husband, Dr. Michael, Gina Brinkman and husband, Chuck, and Matthew Montgomery; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clem Montgomery Jr., Gordon V. Montgomery, Donald E. Montgomery and Robert L. Montgomery; and sister, Barbara J. Klipfel.
Vincent graduated from Waldron High School in 1940.
He served in the 2nd U.S. Air Corp during World War II in Guam.
In 1950, he became the owner of Montgomery Floor Covering in Rushville and later was employed with Wm. H. Block and L.S. Ayres Company in Indianapolis.
The center of Vincent’s life was his family and being a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church dedicating his life to studying scripture and mediation with close friends and family. He was formerly the Sunday school superintendent and taught Sunday school at Waldron United Methodist Church.
Vincent enjoyed writing spiritual poetry that related to nature and family.
He was compassionate, humble and generous with unbelievable optimism and admiration for others. He lived the life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control which radiated to all those who knew him.
Family and friends will gather from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St. in Shelbyville, with a service following visitation. The service will be officiated by the Revs. Colin Cress and Robert Campbell.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with military graveside services by the local military committee.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
