Virginia R. "Ginny" Owens

Virginia R. "Ginny" Owens, 95, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Major Hospital. Born January 3, 1915, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Harry M. and Dema Jane (Blakey) Talbert. Survivors include her daughters, Margaret (husband, Jay) Lowe of West Palm Beach, Florida, Patricia (Dean Sargent) Ash of Anderson and Nancy (husband, Phil) Haehl of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Wade Lowe, Adam Lowe, Melissa Stout, Brad Ash, Amy Willoughby, Allison Wilson, Matt Haehl, Aaron Haehl; eight great-grandchildren; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Eugene Talbert; and sister, Margaret Yanzer. Mrs. Owens was a lifelong resident of Shelby County. She was a homemaker and had been a city editor for the former Shelbyville Republican, held underwriters and real estate licenses; and was comptroller of Admiral Corp. Mrs. Owens graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1933, and reigned as queen of the May Festival. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Tri Kappa Sorority. She spent months writing the history of the Shelbyville chapter of Tri Kappa. She was also active in the Republican Party, was residential chairman for two years for SCUFFY and served as secretary of Girls Club for two years. Mrs. Owens was an avid bridge player and enjoyed socializing and spending time with close friends and family. She never met a stranger, was a kind and generous person and a friend to many. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral homes, with the Rev. Nathan D. Wilson and Pastor Evie Stuard officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library, 57 W. Broadway St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176; or Blue River Community Foundation, 54 W. Broadway St., Suite 1, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
