Walter S. Harmon, 91, of Indianapolis passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Greenwood Village South in Greenwood.
Born August 24, 1919, in Boldman, Kentucky, he was the son of Stallard and Mary Belle (Hatfield) Harmon. He married Nora Ellen Goble on April 13, 1946, and she survives.
Other survivors include his daughters, Joyce Harmon of Beech Grove, Jill McFall and Lynette (husband, William) Rikard, both of Indianapolis; granddaughter, Charlotte Rikard of Indianapolis, brother, Charles (wife, Billie) Harmon of Akron, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, John Douglas Harmon and James Hubert Harmon.
Mr. Harmon graduated from Pikeville High School in 1939 and from Pikeville College in 1941, both in Pikeville, Kentucky. After graduating from high school, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball farm system.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from October 14, 1941 to December 13, 1945, with duty in the South Pacific, New Guinea, China and the Philippines.
Mr. Harmon was a steel slitter at Edgcomb Metals, retiring in 1982 after 33 years of service, and was a member of the United Steelworkers union. He also farmed and had served on the Franklin Township School Board in Marion County.
He was a member of Rocklane Christian Church, where he served as an elder and a Sunday school teacher.
Walter enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially elk with his cousins in Idaho.
Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm, Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 1 pm, Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Lewis Creek Baptist Cemetery in Shelby County.
