William David Tichenor

William David Tichenor, 74, of Indianapolis, a former Shelbyville resident, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis. Born September 22, 1936, in Greensburg, he was the son of Carl H. and Mary Catherine (Lorigan) Tichenor. He married Shirley Wetzel on June 29, 1984, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Kathryn Massengale of Indianapolis; sons, Mark (wife, Cathy) Tichenor of Daniel (wife, Kathy) Tichenor, both of Indianapolis; step-daughters, Karen (husband, Phillip) Chambers of Indianapolis and Sandra (husband, Keith) Stuckert of Cincinnati, Ohio; step-son, David (wife, Jamie) Mellor of Greenville, South Carolina; four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Tichenor; and son-in-law, Jeffrey Massengale. From 1957 to 1982, he was the manager of eight different locations of American General Insurance. In 1982, he was appointed Examiner of Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, later being promoted to Educational Supervisor in which he appeared in 450 public and parochial high schools and colleges advising students of the uses and pitfalls of consumer credit, he retired in 1996. From 1996 to 2010 he was employed at Faeber Bee Windows in Indianapolis. Mr. Tichenor gave speeches at Indiana and Purdue Universities and appeared on the I.U. Friday call-in show. He hosted three years over 170 shows of the PBS program "It's Your Money", which appeared on eight different stations throughout Indiana. In 1976, he was awarded "Boss of the Year" by the American Business Women's Association; in 2004 he received the "Volunteer of the Year" award presented by the Senior Citizens of Central Indiana. He also received over 50 certificates of appreciation from the following organizations: Kiwanis, Rotary International, Lions and other clubs throughout Indiana. Mr. Tichenor was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shelbyville, past treasurer of the Optimist Club in Indianapolis and Franklin Township Civic League. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1954, and Indiana University in 1957, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Mr. Tichenor loved to fish and play golf, he also enjoyed the time he spent coaching Franklin Township Little League. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Father Leon Reuter officiating.. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
