William Edghill Moore, 90, of Shelbyville passed away Monday, September 14, 2009, at St. Vincent North Hospital in Carmel.
Born August 9, 1919, in Shelby County, he was the son of William and Carrie E. (Bush) Moore. He married Betty J. Moore on September 11, 1940, and she preceded him in death on August 23, 1990. He married Betty Charlotte Moore on September 1, 1992, and she preceded him in death on June 13, 2009.
Survivors include his son, John "Ed" (wife, Becky) Moore of Carmel; daughter, Deborah Meszaros of Nashville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Brenda K. (husband, Terry) Ogden of Shelbyville; stepson, Michael Walton of Shelbyville; and brother, Emerson E. Moore of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Lynn Moore; and one sister.
Mr. Moore was a lifelong resident of Shelbyville.
He had been employed at Union Federal Savings in Shelbyville as General Manager, New York Central Railroad in Beech Grove and Carmony Funeral Home. He served as city councilman-at-large, two terms as Shelby County sheriff from 1958 to 1966 and was also Shelby County clerk from 1966 to 1972. He retired in 1988.
Mr. Moore was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion Post No. 70, Eagles Lodge No. 776, Moose Lodge No. 17 in Indianapolis, Free and Accepted Mason Lodge No. 28, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 84, Community Corrections Board and Democrats Century Club. He was a life member of Indiana Sheriff's Association and the Salvation Army Board.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with Masonic rites at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Richard Clark officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the local military committee.
