Yale J. "Ruse" Schalk

April 27, 1927 — November 19, 2010

Yale J. "Ruse" Schalk, 83, of Fairland, passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 at Vancrest Health Care Center in Eaton, Ohio. Born April 7, 1927 in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Yale H. and Elizabeth (Huey) Schalk. He married Betty Ann Schalk, and she preceded him in death in 1974. Survivors include his daughter, Karen (husband, Doug) Ulrich of Eaton; son, Yale (wife, Rosanne) Schalk of Zionsville; grandchildren, Ryan Schalk, Yale Schalk, Jr., Ashley Schalk, Samantha Schalk, Doug Ulrich, Devon Ulrich and Daniel Ulrich. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served during World War II and was a proud member of the American Legion and VFW, where he was recently awarded with 60 years of membership. After graduating from The Ohio State University, where h was also a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, he began a life long career in business and agriculture. He was regional manager of a midwest production livestock association and then worked in crop production where he held several positions developing and marketing plant nutrition and crop protection products for Chevron, Velsicol, Stoller and Royster in North and South American. Mr. Schalk was well known competitive amateur tennis player and golfer and held several course records, club champion and tournament titles including a career seven hole-in-ones. He was active in Indiana and Shelby County politics and was a conservative citizen activist who participated in and contributed to a number of causes. Yale spent his life meeting and talking to people throughout North American. Known to family and friends as "Ruse", he was known for his lively and passionate debate on a wide variety of topics and his interesting stories. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Monday at Girton Schmidt and Boucher Gard Funeral Home, 226 West Main St. in Eaton. Funeral services will be at 7 pm Monday at the funeral home, with Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Visitation will also be held from 11 am to 1 pm Tuesday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Interment will be in Fairland Cemetery in a private ceremony. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 2808 Reading Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206 or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 2300 Wall Street, Suite H, Cincinnati, Ohio 45212 The family would like to thank all the nurses at Vancrest Health Care Center, Hospice of Dayton and Dr. Scott and Tammy Vosler for all the wonderful care Yale received.
